Week 33: services with cryptic names

16 August 2024

I’m working on two exemplar services for Ontario One Call: information management and reporting, and sharing locates. These services have cryptic names that don’t mean much unless you’re involved in the business.

Information management and reporting covers the tools, systems and processes One Call uses to manage and report on events inside and outside its business. The ideal end state is publicly published dashboards and reports. We have a way to go to meet that ambition.

Sharing locates is about exploring whether people digging holes can share their locate information, or requests for information, with other people digging in the same place. It’s ultimately about reducing duplication and inefficiency in the system.

We’re working in partnership with Kainos and Davis Pier, and we’re getting there!

Last week was:

  • finishing the discovery presentation for the information management and reporting work, and watching it get presented
  • planning for, and attempting to define, discovery on the sharing locates work
  • running a “framing the problem” workshop on Friday evening to get everyone aligned on the problems, which resulted in a nice email from the client thanking us for working on a Friday evening

Have a great week.
