Week 20: people take time

17 May 2024

We continue the work of building out the roadmap for Ontario One Call. Yesterday, it started to feel a little more like we’re working with them rather than for them. There were glimmers of a shared realisation that the organisational transformation work is as important as the delivery work.

There are some things we need to keep reinforcing:

  • a single roadmap
  • a single vision
  • your business is digital
  • you can create change in the things you don’t own by making things easier for people to do

An old boss of mine has a saying:

People take time.

That saying has been with me a lot over the past few weeks. It’s two steps forward and one step back, but I have renewed optimism about the next few months. We can and will do good work, but bringing people on the journey with us will take time.

It’s also been lovely spending some time in the office this week, putting faces to names and weeknotes. It’s odd to meet people when you’ve read their weeknotes: you feel like you know them better than you do.

Then Interesting on Wednesday evening. I hadn’t been to Interesting before. It was good. You should go. It’s on again next year. The Public Digital contingent was strong.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Russell Davies, who runs Interesting:

It’s up to you to find it interesting.

That is pretty good life advice!
